Fraternity Myths PDF Print E-mail

The following piece of information, might be comical, yet it is very real and to this day, kept alive by the majority of people who aren't informed enough about the Greek System and Fraternities to differentiate between what is real and what is a “Fraternity Myth”. Our goal is to educate you and share insights as to what is real and what is a myth. Even though we will try to illustrate what is real and what is a myth by giving you some examples and insights as it pertains to our organization and in no way shape or form are we telling you to generalize this information towards any other Greek Organization. Simply, this is only a reflection of Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. Hopefully, the following information will allow you to make a wiser informed decision as you venture towards the possibility of joining our Fraternity.

When you pledge for NAK you are forced to drink in order to join the fraternity? Truth or Myth?

Myth. This is one of the most popular assumptions made by the general public mostly due to bad publicity, poor decisions made by other organizations, movies, and lack of information by the general public.

NAK is proud to have a “dry” pledge process, in which no alcohol, drugs, or any other illegal drugs shall be consumed. Any person in the pledge process who violates this rule, will be immediately removed and forfeit any membership with NAK. There is Zero Tolerance for this behavior.

When you pledge for this fraternity you are forced to run around naked and make a fool of yourself ? Truth or Myth?

Myth. Any person pledging for NAK represents NAK at all times even though they may be going through the process of joining the brotherhood. Their behavior and public appearance reflects on all members associated with the Fraternity. Having said this, at no time would we allow any of our pledges to run around naked, make them wear ridiculous costumes, and embarrass themselves publicly against their will.

As a pledge, you are hit with paddles and physically abused? Truth or Myth?

Myth. This is another one of those popular common assumptions made by everyone. No we don't hit anyone or put anybody in a compromising position were they would get hurt physically. Every single member of NAK takes part in a Risk Management workshop to ensure that all interactions with pledges are within the guidelines of the Risk Management training. We wouldn't have over 1000 Latino members if this were the case.

When you pledge for NAK and join the fraternity, you can't talk to anybody else but the NAK members? Truth or Myth?

Myth. We actually encourage our pledges and especially our members to network and meet other people. We believe that the more people we know, the more resources we'll have to work with and grow both individually and as an organization. By no means do we encourage anybody to let go or make a choice between their friends/acquaintances and the fraternity. Your personal life should be first.

Do you have to pay fees in order to join the organization? Truth or Myth?

Myth. You don't have to pay fees to join, but there are semester dues owed in order to be considered active in the organization. We are a non-profit organization, not rich, and have to organize fundraising events in order to generate money and host certain events. Paying a small fee allows us to begin our planning of parties, pay for T-Shirts, go on road trips to other Chapters, attend National Events, and take part in activities that would cost money for free. In other words, the money comes back to you and it allows the organization to run activities and have fun at the same time.
